Ms. Shannon has been teaching children in kindergarten through third grade for Cincinnati Public Schools for 28 years. This is her second year at Cincinnati Digital Academy. She holds a bachelor’s of science degree in elementary education from Xavier University, a master’s degree in education from Indiana Wesleyan, and has almost completed a Reading Endorsement from Mount Saint Joseph University.
What subjects do you teach?
I teach English/Language Arts, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies.
How long have you been with CDA?
2019-20 was my second year at CDA.
Why did you go into teaching?
You have probably heard this before, "I believe the children are our future…" because it's true! I was blessed to have had some fantastic role models in my years in school and wanted to become a teacher since I was a young girl. I wanted to share my love of learning and encourage children to always do their best while allowing them opportunities to do so in a fun, stress-free, caring environment.
Why did you join CDA teaching staff?
I joined the staff at Cincinnati Digital Academy because I wanted to help the program grow. I wanted to be part of a program that offered an individualized program to ensure each child was able to grow as much as he wanted with the support and guidance of parents. Believe it or not, I am in more contact with my digital families than I was in the "brick and mortar" schools as we have to communicate so much more often.
What do you enjoy most about teaching at CDA?
I love seeing the amount of growth the children make while working online. I love being able to meet with children independently or in small groups to focus on targeted skills to ensure their success. I love the freedom the children have to work from home to be successful.
What is the CDA difference?
All children can learn — just not at the same pace! This program allows for children to be successful in school while working at their own pace. Most children accelerate their learning as they are actively engaged and having fun!
What do you enjoy doing outside of the workday?
I love walking/hiking/training my dogs, being a beekeeper, traveling and reading.
